A’s, B’s and O’s are Missing

Red Cross campaign calls for new blood donors to fill the Missing Types

As part of an international movement, the American Red Cross is launching the Missing Types campaign today to recruit new blood donors – and those who have not given recently – to ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients.

During the Missing Types campaign, the letters A, B and O – the main blood groups – will disappear from brands, social media pages, signs and websites to illustrate the critical role every blood donor plays. When the letters A, B and O vanish from everyday life, the gaps are striking. And when A, B and O blood types are missing from hospital shelves, patient care could be impacted.

“Unfortunately, blood shortages still happen and the number of new Red Cross blood donors is shrinking each year,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “That’s why the Red Cross is asking those who have never donated blood and those who haven’t given in a while to make a lifesaving donation. You are the missing type patients need.”

Don’t wait until the letters A, B and O go missing from hospital shelves. Join the #MissingType movement today – make an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/MissingTypes, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Survey reveals public misconceptions about blood needs and donation

A recent survey, conducted on behalf of the Red Cross, revealed a troubling disconnect between the public’s perception of blood donations and the realities of patient transfusion needs.

  • Three-quarters (74 percent) of the public underestimate how frequently blood transfusions occur.* Most people perceive blood is needed in the U.S. every 15 minutes or even every hour or two hours when in fact, every two seconds, someone in this country needs blood.
  • Nearly half of the public (45 percent) know someone who has been helped by a blood transfusion.* Yet only three percent of the U.S. population donates each year.
  • More than one-third (35 percent) of the public has never considered that blood may not be available when they or a loved one need it.* Blood shortages are not uncommon in the United States and can only be prevented when more people roll up a sleeve to give.
  • More than half (53 percent) of the public believe they need to know their blood type to donate.* Good news – Potential blood donors do not need to know their blood type before giving blood. After individuals give blood, the Red Cross provides each donor their blood type. By joining the #MissingType movement, donors can find out their blood type this summer.

Missing letters can lead to delays in treatment

Lily Dotson and her family, who live in Omaha, know how serious blood shortages can be for patients. During Lily’s  2 1/2 years of treatment for high-risk leukemia, her family was told twice that the hospital didn’t have the blood or platelets she needed and that she would have to wait for transfusions. It was incredibly frustrating and eye-opening for Lily’s mom, Susie Dotson.

“People automatically think blood is there. They don’t realize we’re relying on their blood donation,” said Dotson. “Lily needed blood products just as much as the chemo or the treatment.”

Lily, now 11, has been cancer-free for four years and is preparing to enter middle school this year.

Each day, blood and platelets are needed for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those like Lily who are receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.

New donors needed

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. But for the past four years, new Red Cross donors have declined by about 80,000 each year. This is not just a Red Cross trend, but a challenge blood collection organizations face across the country and around the world.

Donating blood is a simple process and only takes about an hour from start to finish.

  • Registration: Sign in, show ID and read required information.
  • Health check: Answer questions and receive a mini-physical.
  • Donation: Giving a pint of blood only takes about eight to 10 minutes.
  • Refreshments: Donors enjoy snacks and relax before resuming their day.

The Red Cross appreciates the support of its 18 lead partners who have joined the #MissingType campaign, including: Adobe, Anheuser-Busch, AvalonBay Communities, Inc., Domino’s, Dropbox, Google, IBM, Land O’Lakes, Inc., Mastercard, Nationwide, Neiman Marcus, the New York Yankees, Oreo, PayPal, Salesforce, State Farm®, Sunoco and U.S. Bank.

Red Cross calls for summer blood donations to prevent a shortage

The American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to give blood and help ensure patient needs can be met this summer.

Around Memorial Day, the Red Cross sees a steep decline in blood donations. Busy summer schedules, vacations and school breaks also cause a drop in donations. Accidents and medical emergencies don’t take a summer break – patients need blood every minute, every day.

In the summer of 1973, Ramona Johnson was playing at the park when she was injured jumping off the swings. She was bleeding profusely from a 7-inch gash in her leg. By the time she reached the hospital, she needed an emergency transfusion. She credits the donors who took the time to give blood with helping to save her life.

Johnson’s childhood experience receiving blood compelled her to make her first blood donation more than 10 years ago. “A little voice told me that this would be a great way to give back,” she said. “I have been faithfully donating every eight weeks since.”

The public is asked to schedule an appointment to help ensure that hospitals and patients have the blood they need this summer. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Lofte Community Theatre to Present the Classic Musical, Oliver!

Opening Soon OliverThe Lofte Community Theatre, located in Manley, NE will stage Lionel Bart’s classic musical, Oliver! July 21 - 22, July 26 - 29, and August 2 - 5.

Set in Victorian England, the musical follows the story of young Oliver who escapes from an abusive orphanage and soon finds himself on the streets of London, settled in with a band of pickpockets and thieves, led by Fagin. When the boy is captured for a theft that he did not commit, his benevolent victim becomes his only chance of discovering the true love of a family.

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike. Lionel Bart wrote the music, book and lyrics for Oliver!

Oliver!, premiered on London’s West End in 1960 before moving to Broadway in 1963. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the show making its American debut which is why Lofte Artistic Director Kevin Colbert thought it was time to bring the show to the stage in Manley once again, “This classic piece of musical theatre has been charming audiences for more than five decades. It’s full of memorable tunes, a heart-warming story, and, of course, allows the Lofte to fill our stage with so much local talent. That’s a hallmark of a big summer musical at the Lofte. This cast has been hard at work since the beginning of June, and there are countless others who volunteer their summer to make Oliver! A huge success. We can’t wait for audiences to see this show!”

Joining Colbert’s artistic team is musical director, Betty Colbert and choreographer, Noelle Bohaty.

The cast of Oliver! Includes John Bell, Natalie McGovern, Peyton Banks, Chris Berger, Wade Mumford, Atticus Heneger, Brandy Abbott, Rilynn Whitney, Kharis Jensen, Cyrus Monson, Drew Carlson, Haley Cecava, Xander Monson, McKenna Jones, James Nygren, Skyler Radloff, Therese Rennels, Kathryn Rappold, Kori Radloff, Aaron Spracklin, Eric Radloff, Khyenne Cottrell, Stephen Paal, Lilly Frields, Abraham Vidaurre, Hannah Segure, Piper Monson, Ken Patry, Jeff Johnston, Lynette Boyce, Brenda Jones, Bob Boyce, Lucas Hrabik, Dayton Carlson, Rachel Radloff, Lily Borland, and Andrew Schell.

Tickets for Oliver! can purchased by calling the Lofte Community Theatre box office at 402-234-2553, or by visiting the theatre’s website at www.Lofte.org  and clicking on “Tickets”. Curtain time for the show is 7 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. For more information, call the Lofte Community Theatre or visit www.Lofte.org .

About The Lofte Community Theatre: The Lofte Community Theatre is located in Manley Nebraska, approximately 25 miles south of Omaha. The theatre, a new post-and-beam style performing arts facility can seat approximately 330 patrons for each performance. Actors and audience members enjoy a beautiful climate-controlled venue year around. The Lofte offers a full concession stand, and also sells beer and wine. The theatre offers six core season productions each year as well as many special events featuring visiting artists including week-long children’s theater workshop, a free Veterans Day concert, and host high-school one-act play competitions in the fall.  Approximately 12,000 visitors come through the doors annually.
